I have both a 690 series and an 890 series routers. I bought the 890 series last year as an upgrade to the 690. The 890 has soft start, variable speed and a more powerful motor, all of which make it nicer to use. It also has a fine height adjustment which makes it nice to dial in the perfect cut. I've used it both as a hand held and mounted in a table and it works great either way. The 690 is still a good router, I keep both so I can have one table mounted and one for hand held use.

I use one in the router table. Quieter, smoother than I've used before. Can be adjusted from above the table. I love it.

Hi Bill,

My opinion is based solely on handling. I much prefer the 690 series. A better feel in the hand and better balance (not as top heavy). I have a number of the 690s and a combo 890-93. I used the latter for a week or so but just could not get comfortable with it and it's sat on the shelf since.

I use my 890 in the table. I have a smaller C-man for hand use.
The newer PC890s have an improved plunge base. It has one spring as opposed to 2. The older base had sticking issues. The router itself is a nice tool. I like mine.

+1 for the 890 in the router table. Very happy with it. Seldom take it out unless I need a handheld that can take a 1/2 inch shank. :)

I bought one of the "new" 893s about four years ago. It had the older style plunge base, which was nearly unusable. The motor works okay in my router table and that is where it stays. Even with the new style plunge base, Dewalt or Bosch kits would be better options IMHO.
