I've got a set of those spring loaded lid stays that I'm putting on in addition to normal hinges... having a horrible time trying to get them to line up correctly.

I was wondering what everyone else uses? I think there are some hinges that are tougher to close that won't slam shut, also add on's like gas shocks, etc. The thing I don't really care for w/ these spring loaded ones when they do work, will be that it'll still slam once the initial catch is released.

Preference on types, brands, etc. Lid is aprox 34in by 22in, 3/4 oak.

Rockler has new torsion hinges. I used them on a piano bench I made. They work really well.

I wonder how long it will be before they offer them in other finishes. . .

Brian beat me to it. Just keep your lid weight within spec.

I've used the lid supports from Rockler.http://images.rockler.com/rockler/images/26153-01-200.jpg
The come in left and right hand versions. They work just fine as long as the lid weight is kept within the limits. They also come in a couple of sizes, but I'm not sure Rockler carries other sizes. I will admit the anchor locations weren't easy to figure out from the literature that came with the lid support.

The spring type that Lee mentioned were used on a recent blanket chest I made. An additional board was added at the back for a piano hinge, giving me a double thickness and changing the hinge point relative to the support. The instructions provided with the hinge were not useful for this situation requiring a small prototype that was used for trial and error to figure out the correct placement. I still like the supports and will use them again, just warning that any deviation from the hinge point may require trial and error.
