I am beginning to start to commence to turn some segmented stuff, and I am looking for holly to set off a feature ring I want to build. Am having a really hard time locating any holly; no one in Portland or Vancouver seems to have any. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

I just use Maple and Purpleheart to define and accent my segmented work, I think it works just fine, and Maple is a good bit cheaper that Holly I think.

Bernie Hi,
How much holly are you looking for and in what form?
I live in Toledo near Newport.
Maybe I can get some to you.

hey lynn, I checked out your page and you have some nice turnings. If I'm ever up in Oregon I'll let you know. or vise versa if you're in San Diego

Lynn, I am just looking for enough to do a couple of 12 segment rings. Probably no more than a couple of board feet would be plenty.

Bernie, you might give these guys a call: http://www.anexotichardwood.com/lumber.html
They usually have a good supply.

I bought a few narrow (~5") boards from Gilmer in Portland a couple years ago. Was ~$10/bd ft.

In my segmented turnings I usually use a select hard maple chosen for the whiteness. Holly is a pretty soft wood and you might have problems with it especially if you marry it with ebony. Holly is rather porous so it may absorb the dust more than you would like.

Bernie,

You might try the Woodcraft store in Portland. 12020 SW Main Street Tigard, (503) 684-1428. Last time I was there, they had it. Poor quality, but that was a long time ago, and they have had time to turn over to fresh inventory. You also might try http://www.gilmerwood.com . I don't think it is a regular item for them, but I have seen it there a couple of times.

Sadly none of the places mentioned in Portland or surrounding area (including Gilmer and Woodcraft) have any in stock.

Here are some pics Bernie

3 of the boards are 4/4
1 is about a 1/2"

After slicing the boards I see that they are not completely cured still on the greenish side.
There is some end checking because I did not seal them.
The wood was originally cut for bowl blanks.
They are yours if you want them for shipping cost.
IF you need a couple extra boards I still have some that I can cut and add to these.
