HBO Special - Taking Chance

I am not sure if this is against forum rules as being political; for me it was one of the most emotional movies I have ever watched.

The movie is based on the actual experience of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, who volunteers to escort the body of a young Marine (Chance Phelps) who was killed in Iraq, and whose remains are being returned to the Marine's family. Scene after scene in this movie are pitch perfect, and it made me appreciate the professionalism and sacrifice of those in the military. No matter what your feeling is about the war in Iraq, I feel this movie is something every US citizen should see, as well as every government official. As a result of seeing "Taking Chance," the dedication and professionalism of our military is far more tangible, as well as the pain and suffering each family experiences with each death.

The attention to detail is extaordinary in today's world.

Thanks Bob. According to the schedule it airs again tonight at 8:00 in our area. I'll try to make it through the movie. I cried just watching the trailer. I get extremely emotional over just about anything related to those who serve, and have served. I have no idea why. I had the opportunity to produce a mock up of a portion of the Ranger Memorial here in Savannah. I laser engraved the Ranger Creed on an 18 x 36 piece of black granite. I kept tearing up when I was setting up the engraving, while the engraver was running, and at every planning meeting I attended. Guess I better grab a box of tissues on the way home. Make it a big box; I normally like to watch movies a second time; it allows the opportunity to appreciate scenes knowing what is coming next; not sure if I can watch this again. You will see what I mean; when you watch it.

I know - my dad was a Marine; however; at his request during the Vietnam War; I enlisted in the Navy.

Bob, I got held up at a homeowner's association meeting last night and since I was keeping minutes I couldn't sneak out. I didn't want to tune in midway through. A friend did watch, however, and I thought you might like to know her thoughts. When she lived in Connecticut she had a lot of interaction with schools through an Arts program. She feels that this movie should be shown to every child in every school in Amercia, even realizing that there are some who will argue that it is "too strong" for children to watch. In her opinion, seeing this movie would make a greater impact on children than taking them to a Verteran's Day Parade or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, although they should still experience both.
I realize that there are many who will disagree with this opinion, but it seems there seem to be so many people, both young and old, who have no pride in America, and don't realize what it means to be an American.

With the exception of my father, every one of my ancestors (that I am aware) of have answered the call to duty when needed, including during the Revolutionary War. I feel a great sense of gratitude to them, and all those who serve and have served. I also feel a great sense of pride in the professionalism of our Armed Forces, which apparently shines through in the film.
