Brace question

I have 2 Stanley 923 Braces. I don't know if the plating is nickel or chrome. There is a little gunk on the knurled part of the chuck. Can I clean it with a brass brush and some thinner or if it's nickel will that damage the plating? In that case I'd try a toothbrush --or is there a better way. The braces work wonderfully and I don't want to take them apart -- this is just a cosmetic touch up. Thanks.

As I suspected, my book says they are nickel plated.

I am not sure what chemical reactions would take place. Mineral spirits is not likely to discolor it though.
