About a year ago I got a large walnut stump with a graph zone between a black walnut root and an english walnut top. Well I finally got around to carving it up yesterday and this is what I found

The Stump:

The Harvest (plus 4-5 large blocks cut from crotches destined to be hollowforms if I ever get that Clarke Hollowing System):

A blank with some cool marble cake figure:

A rough turned bowl from the graph zone:

Now let the chips fly!

Joel - good to see you posting again! Sure is some beautiful wood! Love the bowl - you just don't see walnut like that - naturally! Looking forward to seeing lots more of the walnut mix - real soon! Have fun!

Joel:

Very nice, that was a big tree. I particularly like the curly grain on the bowl. This wood turns and finishes well, I think you will enjoy it.

Joel, did you know having that many blanks in your shop at one time could put a real strain on your home life? To prevent that from happening, I strongly suggest trying to give some of those to any turners that might be foolish enough to take them. Pay no attention the devilish grin they may have while speeding away from your shop with their cars, trucks or wheelbarrows. That is just one of the side effects from being exposed to that situation. Your very lucky that we were able to catch this in time.:);)
Seriously, congrats on the wood...............Tony

That, my friend, was a big chunck of wood. How long did it take to cut those blanks?

Great looking wood and it took a lot of work and time to get all the cutting done - what did you put on the wood to keep it from cracking?

Beautiful stuff. Your picture shows stump, then rounded and sealed blanks, but I can appreciate all the work that went on in between! That must have been a chore! You'll probably have your fill of turning walnut bowls by the time your done with that pile.

I HAVE lots of wood, so I don't get jealous often, but I'm jealous!
I can also appreciate the amount of work it was to process that butt... WELL DONE.
If that beautiful platter is an example of what you have - - now I'm REALLY jealous and you really did the wood justice.
Congratulations, on every point.
