Had a friend drop this by the shop yesterday. It looks to be a Red Oak of some sort. I put the 5 gallon water bottle next to so you can judge the size some. He got the burl down and ended up using his track hoe to left it into the back of his truck. This thing must weigh in around 400 pounds. From the out side it looks like it might have some pin burl in it which I've never had in the oak burls that I've worked on.

funny, I see all these comments about burl, and I must confess ignorance. the wood is no doubt beautiful, but I had no idea what it was or how it formed. So last night I "googled" it and spent some time reading.

OK - so guess what I did on the drive to work today? yup, trying to see if there's any around. LOL.

Jack, That looks like a beauty! Good luck with the pieces you turn from it. Maybe take a cap off one big bump to see what is inside and show us the cut off! Then turn a beautiful bowl out of it!!

Super burl,

Jeff

That burl is way to dangerous for you to turn.:(

You need to send it to me.:D

Can you make large bowls on your lathe? I would try to make the largest bowl I could out of that piece.

Wyatt,
I don't think it will fit in your mail box.:) I have 24" swing on the outboard side of my 1640. This burl is completely around the trunk so I will be able to get a number of large blanks. I plan on coring at least one or two of the blanks with 18" or 20" being the largest of the set if it works out. I just got the largest knife set for my Oneway coring system so I will attempt my largest set of nested bowls yet. My experience with oak is that it like's to move and can check so we will see how this burl does.
