A "friend", and I use that term loosely:p, pointed me to Mark Placek's website filled with amazing square and rectangle bowls.

How hard can it be I thought, just some scraps, glue, and clamps. Well, it's also patience and precision...both of which I lack....but here is my first attempt. ..... 7 1/4 x 11 1/2 x 1 3/4....one coat AO, buffed. Walnut, Jarrah, Redheart.

ANY and ALL comments appreciated.

Barry....beautifully done! Have your fingers quit ducking yet? I'm sitting here pondering a piece of mesquite crotch given to me by a Fedex pilot from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Everytime I think about doing a winged bowl with it the fingers on both hands flinch!

Cool bowl.

Now would you consider that a segmented bowl?

Nicely done. I hate turning air. Great job on your first winged bowl.

Very nice piece. Laminated, not segmented. Love the top side, not so much the bottom. Bothered by the varying thickness and flat spots at corners of the wings, but not sure what to suggest. I hate when somebody complains but has no suggestion for improvement. Sorry about that. Still a very nice piece despite my nitpicking.

Thanks for the comments folks!

And these wingy dingy thingies aren't too bad. Turn ANYTHING with body parts on the wrong side of the rest and you will get thumped. ....these just put a little "cutting" emphasis on the thump!:D

Great looking bowl Barry. I call that pucker factor. Don't get the pinkies or a shirt sleeve on the other side of the tool rest.

I like what you have done here. Looks quite unique. My lathe is only big enough that it would hold a jelly bean or two. Like it a lot.

Hi Barry,

Great job! Nice bowl..
I've been waiting for someone to try this type of turning.
I hope you'll continue to develop your own style with square and rectangular bowls.
You now know how dangerous it is have a very unbalanced piece of wood spinning.

I want to try that, but I keep thinking I would be cutting up a perfectly good cutting board!
