I am in the process of making a web site for the business. Anyone that has a professional web site that wouldn't mind me seeing how yours is set up please reply with your site address. If the world was made of white oak I could fix anything, but how to promote the shop without looking like a dork is beyond me.

Thanx in advance.

Mark, I'm replying with my business's address via PM to you, please check it. If you have any specific questions about web design and/or promotion, just reply back to me and I'll be glad to help.

I am not sure what you want to do with your site, what I have found is it is easier to start with a good template well worth the 50 bucks or so. I have used templates from http://allwebcodesign.com/ they look good and you can insert your pictures and content some of them come paypal ready.

If you are looking to sell your products on line you might want to check out Yahoo small business they have a all in one solution.

Promotion is a million dollar question it depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend or how much time you want to put into it. if you have specific question you may Pm me.

Just one more option. Look at any sites you like and right click and view source. Now you will need an HTML book (library) to help you understand, but it can be done.

Mark,

Send a PM to Andy Hoyt, a Moderator here. He designs these things for a living and I'd bet he'd be willing to give you some hints.

Id say do it yourself. Have control of your website. Theres one called homestead.com , you can do it with no experience just a little computer know how, no programming. theres also freewebs.com an geocities is free free but I think theres adds.

If you can affort it and you need a professional looking site with professional features, bite the bullet and get it done by a pro on an ecommerce platform.

I've got a decent site, but I'm looking for better, likely by Able Commerce by the end of the year.

If you do it yourself, resist the 'down the middle of the page' syndrome if you can.

not wood related, but I did all three of these sites
http://www.cu-charityride.org/
http://www.bradandpam.com/weather/
http://www.i3investigations.com/

The root of the second one was by me too, but that was a few years ago and I have come along a little since then.

The first two were done with Expression Web (Microsoft) using a couple of different templates I found by Googling "free css templates".
The third one I did from scratch (with Expression). I'm really trying to figure out css, so the back end code on the third one is a little sloppy when it comes to css managment, but its a start.

Expression Web is a totally new web dev product from Microsoft. The dropped Frontpage and started from scratch. I like it.

You can go a long way with Wordpress these days.

If what you want is the on-line equivalent of a yellow pages ad or brochure, you can use nearly any web host and any number of free CSS templates (you can Google that phrase). If you are selling things on the web site, then it gets more complicated, and a turn key solution is probably the best idea (a lot of people like the $10 per month Yahoo shops for this).

I've done a few in that "static site" category ... modirt.com, lewistonrental.com, montgomeryowners.com, politetalk.com ... and it isn't very expensive at all. As soon as you move into "e-commerce", it gets a bit more complicated and more time (and money) is involved.
