On the end of my bench, I have a large front vise that came with collets (it's the German made version of this);

Now I want to get another vise for the side of my bench. I'm looking at the quick release large vises, and they don't have collets.

Does anyone have experience with both? Is there a loss of support without the collets, or are the collets just a hold-over from a bygone era?

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Greg,

I think we might have a problem with terminology here, what I understand to be a collet is usually associated with chucks. You may be thinking of something else perhaps?

The main difference between those two vises is one has quick release and is a lot more expensive.

In this picture from Lee Valley, you can see them on the ends of the guide rods, the round pieces with a flat on them. They actually go in the vise face attached to the bench.

Hi Greg,

Ok I see what you mean, as far as I know, they are just to stop the vise from inadvertently coming all the way out, more likely to happen with a quick release.
