I have an old Stanley No 4 plane with an aluminum frame. This is the only plane I ever saw with that type frame. I'm wondering if its really as scarce as I think and what its worth. Its not like new, but complete and undamaged, except for wear.

There is a write up on this plane generally referred to as a dumb idea among collectors.

They generally bring a bit more at auction than a regular Stanley plane but not "out of sight". Many people report that they're not great users because the aluminum tends to mark the wood, especially if the plane hasn't been used in a while. Also, many people prefer a bit more weight to a plane.

They tend to be bought by collectors who just want an example in their collection.

So, yes, it is somewhat rare but, no, you can't retire off the sale of it.

I come across them sometimes, last one I sold was $125, several years ago. I don't have one in my collection now. I personally dislike the lighter weight. Stanley went the wrong direction here. The B&G link that Greg posted is a fun read on these and others.
