The best way I've found to judge how smooth a router's bearings is to turn it on,then turn it off, listening to how smooth the bearings sound just as they come down slow and stop. Any rattling noise isn't so good. I bought a Bosch router to use on a carving machine I am making based on the sound the bearings made.

I didn't test a lot of routers, but the Bosch was the best of 3 or 4. Porter Cable didn't sound nearly as good.

For my application,I just wanted the router body, and also liked the magnesium body's lightness on the Bosch, and the variable speed. It doesn't scream so much if you turn it down just a little, but routs just fine.
