Hi All,
I've been lurking for a little while and finally have a project to post. I am building a captain style bed for my daughter. I am using Aspen and it will be painted white. My wife saw a bed she liked and took a picture of it. I am building it based off the pics. These pics are of the footboard and headboard. Just wanted to post some pics and say this site is a great resource.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I have been butchering wood for awhile but on recently decided to get serious about it. This site has been a great inspiration and I am a long ways away from having the tools and skills of alot of you guys.

Here is tonights pic of the bed. I built the face frame for the drawers. My local Lowes was out of decent Apsen so I went with select pine for this part of the bed. Should be fine as it is being painted.

Looking from some advice. I am ready to paint the bed and have a question. Should i prime the wood before painting? Any suggestions on what to use?

Yes prime it with zinzer primer. I think i spelled it wrong.

Prime it and be sure to use furniture grade paint.
I made the mistake of buying paint from lowes on my first painted project and the paint was always tacky. I kept thinking the paint was still wet... I waited and waited for a month... still tacky so I stripped it off and then used milk paint on it. Then coated with poly to protect it.

The Captain's Bed is turning out nice Mike, but... be prepared to upgrade from Captain to General's Bed as they grow up quick and move up rapidly in authority. It's amazing how quick it takes for them to be grown up and in complete authority of their own household. :)

Thanks Sarge,
Currently they are 6 and 3 and both girls. I have only one refuge left as it is and I will need a much bigger shop by the time they are teenagers.
I am very happy with the bed so far. This is the biggest project I have done in my meager wood working career.

Bed is complete and my daughter seems to like it. Still needs drawer pulls but I'll get to that this weekend.

Turned out great - and coordinates very well with the room. So, does your daughter have to keep all the toys and stuffed animals in the drawers? Hope that idea works for you:D Never did for us! More drawers= more stuff!

Mike, A very nice project and I'm sure it was built with the love you have for your daughters. Please post a photo of the finished product when you can.

John,
I'll be lucky to keep my daughter out of the drawer, let alone have her keep anything in it.
