Shaun,
I am new to and have some stopper bottom headed my way. I will turn some soon as well.

Did you run into any problems?

Would have done anything different?

Thanks for the comments. I sand to 600 grit which is more than Needed I am sure. Then seal with seal o cell. 3 spray coats of laquer and a quick shot on a beal buffing wheel with all 3 compounds. Woods are from left to right, red palm, goncalo alves, madrone burl, and red heart.

Some tips I have learned. I first sprayed with a satin laquer and buffed to get a nice mirror shine. Recently I started using gloss instead and noticed that i get a great miror finish without buffing. Some woods the grain raises with the seal o cell others donot. If they do just sand with a gray pad till smooth then spray your laquer. If there are any more questions I love to answer them.

All my stoppers start at 2 1/4 inches long and 1 1/2 in sq stock. I use either a chuck for the ones with a dowel or a mandrel for the tear drop ones. Bring in a live center for the tail stock support. Turn the tail stock first which will be the stoppers top. Leaving a small tennon that will be turned off once the rest of the shape is formed. One helpful thing is once the hole is drilled or the dowel mounted in the blank is to mark the diameter of the cork on the blank or the diameter of the stoppers base that will be in contact with the wood. helps you blend the stopper with the cork or metal base.
