Not surprised. If you are lucky, you will be able to find 3 2X8s with sequential grain that will lay up into a 5' wide sheet for around half that. But be very careful splicing that stuff. Backed veneers are typically so thin that any sanding at all will go right through. You gotta get them perfectly flush.

We paid $200 for a 5x10 rift white oak. Most likely the high price is the one sheet. We purchased 5 on that order...

We just received an order for 5 sheets 1/4 sawn sapele. Didnt look anything like the samples Formwood sent us so it may go back. I'll see if I can find the invoice...

If you're already stuck with seaming veneer, you might better buy raw veneer instead of those backed sheets. Then you'd get the full 1/40". You can sand a lot on that before you get in trouble. You also get guaranteed matching across the whole 5' sheet. The downside, of course, is more seams to make. But if you're already committed to seaming, a few more don't hurt as much.

Good point Jamie. Unless he intends to lay it up with contact cement. Otherwise you are right on.

Sauers & Company (http://sveneers.com/) are the folks who sell through the Woodcraft outlets. They have a terrific variety but nothing close to 5-feet across. So, if splicing is an option, you might want to give them a try - their largest, I believe, 4' X 8', in sheets.
