I need to make a stand that will be compact yet support a 10' flag pole. I made a prototype but it just dosen't have the stabiltiy that I need. I used a typical + type design but unless I make the legs really long it is unstable. And the kicker is it needs to be fairly light so that I can mail it to Hawaii:eek: Any ideas?

Assuming you use an enclosed round or square base, you can put a bolt on the bottom of the stand for a 20 lbs freeweight to be supplied by the recipient.

Jack,
I think Dan is on the right track. Design your base so the ballast can be provided locally - whether it be sand, concrete block etc. If the base is to be a permanent resident in Hawaii, concrete could be poured into the base as well. Also consider the plastic umbrella bases that are filled with sand - maybe a few of them for ballast.
Just food for thought.

Thanks guys, I'm starting to lean toward telling the person to just buy an umbrella stand in hawaii and fill it with sand as you suggested.
