I intended to build this out of pine just as a prototype so I could see how it looked before I used some cherry. However, she likes it enough to let me get on to the next project without using up the cherry. Maybe she's been waiting so long she'll take anything?

looks like the table required a few mortises.
Did you use a dedicated mortiser?

Bob,
No... I don't have one yet. I hope I do when I start building some bigger stuff...Mission Style...

Right now I use the drill press to drill hole, chisel to square mortise and table saw with dado for the tenon. It really didn't take too long once I got set up but this was pine.

It looks great in pine, but I think teh cherry would be great too.

Very Nice! I like working with pine now and then also. You never know if you are going to clear coat it and paint it until it's done.

Again, very nice looking table.

If this is your prototype work, I would love to see what you make when you are making the real thing.

....and, some good looking Pine, as well! Don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think Pine can be as much/more a PITA than many of the hardwoods. Personally, I think making Pine look as good as this is a craft in itself! Again, nice job, Glenn!

Glen -

You took that pine and made a work of art. Good selection of wood just for the prototype.

With no dedicated mortiser and no mention of Salisbury's magic mortise and tenon cutter ... its anything but simple ... when did you start this??? 1973??

Admirable job Glenn ... and it looks fine in Pine .. no rhyme intended!!

Thanks for the comments yawl. Maybe I'll try it in cherry someday.

However, a small three drawer oak chest and a complete library is on the 2do list first. Not to mention sharpen, clean, sort, find all those tools that seem to be forgotten and have been tortured through the kitchen install.

I really enjoy making things with pine. I have made several tables with nice old pine and with a BLO/Poly hand rubbed finish, they look really great, and fit in with the look of our old house, with its ancient pine flooring.

Two of my favorite tables were made from 2x4s of southern yellow pine.
