I'm probably preaching to the choir but I'll give it a shot anyway. Check your houses for possible entry points for water. It is probably the most damaging element.

I work as a handyman and have seen water damage and rot in several homes including one that was only 6 years old. The usual cause is failed or improper caulking. On older homes with caulk glazed windows, if the caulk dries out and cracks it can allow water to accumulate under it. Exterior door jams are another problem area. Bow windows need special attention with the caulk and some of the trim pieces should be beveled to help drain the water. Trim pieces in general where exposed to weather have to be properly caulked and painted.

Roof leaks need to be stopped as soon as possible.
