Seems like I have been looking for a set of turner’s calipers that fit my needs forever! I could not find a commercially made pair that had the needed reach and a built in scale. I really wanted to eliminate the need to have 3 hands to take a decent measurement. I stumbled onto a “how to” for these from Kevin’s woodturnings. http://www.turnedwood.com/tools&jigs.html
They are quite simple to make and Kevin gives a nice little article to assist you in making them. I made two so far. The smaller I use for bowls and boxes and the tall pair I use for HF’s. They easily reach the bottom of a 12”vase and getting the readings is as simple as looking at the scale. Mine are a bit rough but I did not care about “pretty” just function.
