View Full Version : Calling all architects!! (And a quick trivia question for non-architects!)

No, I'm not looking for free plans. I'm just looking for some recommendations, and here's why. Since this area is largely a redneck area :D, and I work in the trades, I hear construction features called all sorts of different names (sometimes profane, depending on the progress of the job ;) ). I was wondering if I could "elevate the discussion" with some reference material. Specifically, I would like some direction towards some sort of architectural glossary. I have picked up a few terms from reading construction magazines, but oftentimes, those rags refer to certain construction details according to their proper names without ever defining the terms. Sure, I can get through a painting article just fine (my main trade), but reading an article on a complicated framing detail is like reading a medical journal to me. So, I'd appreciate any recommendations toward such a glossary.

Now, the trivia question: What is a "quoin" (pronounced either 'koin' or 'kwoin')? And, no, it's not a form of currency. (This is one of the few architectural terms I DO know).

THANKS!!

How about....

It is pronounced COIN.

It is the dressed stones at the corners of buildings.
Usually laid so their faces are alternately large and small.

Does that help any?

Quoin is defined in some detail at this site (http://www.hyperdictionary.com/dictionary/quoin)

If I need to find a word, I first turn to google.com. Better than most dictionaries :)

Jason....Rednecks in Indiana? Tsk, tsk, tsk. To be politically correct*, you have to refer to them as rural residents devoid of extended education and cultural development. Okay. Rednecks is easier.:)

Thanks for the links, guys, but I'm actually looking for a BOOK. You know, one of those things with paper, ink and a binding of some sort? ;) I want something that I can keep handy in my work truck, so that when I see an architectural feature that piques my interest, I can look up its proper name--before I forget about it (my usual 20 minute drive home generally serves to empty my brain of most things related to the preceeding hours). I guess that also implies that I'm looking for something with some good illustrations that are labelled with proper terms.

And, Dennis got it right, though I suspect he looked it up...

Jason,

Nobody ever told me I "had to know everything" about everything. Just where to look it up WHEN I need to know it!! ;) :D

It's kinda like a sick computer and the computer repair person. The sick computer is FREE but the computer repair is $1,000.....just because he KNOWS which button to push and When.
