Is there a certain way of installing these things?
I can't figure out how they work if you screw them in perpendicular to the apron.(Or maybe you don't?) Where's the leeway for expansion come from?
How far apart should they be along the apron?
Thanks in advance.

I install them at about a 45 degree angle to the apron, so they can rotate as top expands and contracts.

I believe you screw one end onto the apron from the top; then put on the table top, and screw the other end up into the bottom of the top piece. As Bruce said, install at an angle so that as the wood contracts or expands, the connect will "pivot" accordingly.

Note - I've never used these before, I've only read about them, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night....

I bought mine at a Rockler partner store. Here's a link to the directions they gave me. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?Offerings_ID=786&TabSelect=Details Click on the technical document.

Hmmm...thanks. 12" spacing but noticed they don't say anything about installing at an angle but that would seem to be the way to go.
