Here's proof that my bluebird house is a bluebird house. The male claimed this house immediately as his own. He has done so for the last three years. Made of western red cedar. The roof, front and back are attached to each other and the sides and bottom are attached to each other. Four screws on the back let me slide it apart each year for cleaning.

Very nice. I'm interested in building it myself (for my son). DO you have any plans? Also - did you apply and finish to it?

Thanks
Bart

Sorry, I don't have any plans for it. I just made it up myself. The sides sit in dados which are milled into the front and back so I can slide it apart for cleaning. Start with square stock and cut the dados in the front and back, then cut the side shapes and roof shape. Then cut the sides to fit the dados and attach a bottom to them making a u-shape. All that is left is to build the roof. Hope this helps. The finish is minwax hellsman spar urethane.

It's always nice when things work out the way you hope for.
Congratulations on a nice project.

Man, sometimes I can be pretty dumb. When you said a bluebird house, I was expecting a birdhouse that was blue. It's a wonder I haven't cut off a finger yet.
Take care,
Jim

I made a few bluebird houses a couple years ago...

Used the plans from the book, "The Backyard Birdhouse Book", by Rene' and Christyna Laubach.

Well, we had bluebirds for a couple days, then the sparrows or starlings or some other ugly bird killed them and took over the nest box. I was not a happy camper.

So, how big is your entrance hole?

Do you have any problems with other birds?

How tall is the post your box is mounted on?

I am going to try to build a Peterson style nest box, and see if I have better luck. Just bought some cypress a couple days ago just so I could try again.

Martin,
Sorry I am just now answering your questions. The entrance hole is 1 1/2" in diameter. From ground to level to the bottom of the house is 6 ft. We have no problem with other birds. The bluebirds show up every year and the male spends alot of time sitting on the house as if to guard it. We have, however, had to deal with blacksnakes trying to get the babies. Not fun.
