I am headed to Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lafayette this week on business. Are there any wood worker stores that I need to to visit while there? Not that I need to visit any as I always buy another hand tool and thus far they have fit into my suitcase and TSA has not absconded with them. thanks joe

Joe,
It's been a while since I've been in BR or Lafayette, so I can't vouch for those cities. If you value your life, stay out of New Orleans! Besides, there are no woodworker friendly tool stores (or lumberyards, for that matter) there. Plenty of construction-grade lumber and power tools but that's about it.

Have a good trip,
Lee

Joe,

Nothing in Baton Rouge or New Orleans. I don't think Lafayette has any wood working stores either. Closest place I know of is Woodcraft in Mobile, AL.

If you find anything in Louisiana worth 2 cents that you can't eat, let me know . . . I have been here all but 6 years of my life . . .

No woodworking stores . . . . now we do have drive thru daiquiri shops.

You can drink in public . . . heck in New Orleans in the French Quarter you can do most anything in public . . . . . you can even be shot or stabbed without any effort . . . :)

Steven, have you checked out http://www.riversidelumber.com (http://www.riversidelumber.com/)?

I checked some prices with them about a year ago, but never went over (I;m about 60 nmiles east of NO),

Riverside is pretty nice for a lumberyard in this area. They stock mostly domestic lumber, but do have some exotics. They got beat up pretty bad by Katrina, but have since built new warehouses, and they don't mind if you wander around and hand pick your own stuff.

Lumber is not that big a problem . . . but woodworking stores like Woodcraft are non-existent . . .

The ability to hand pick is the only plus, though. The cherry and walnut (usually under 6" width) is over $7.00/bf last time I was there. I think they are single handedly trying to finance the rebuilding of New Orleans!

Have you guys tried Acadian Hardwoods in Ponchatoula? I have not. I have bought from Hogan Hardwoods in BR a time or two.

Are we hijacking the thread? :)

Ah. Gotcha.

I think the nearest Woodcraft to me (and maybe to you!) is in Mobile.

On the bright side, every month or so a truck rolls up in front of my house with a box of tools for me, so I don't have to drive much.
