Question on my new drill press, and excuse the ignorance. What is the flat machined area with 2-slots on the base for? I assume maybe for a fixed pedestal table instead of using the adjustable table? No hints in the manual.

Those are most likely bolt down points for the drill press.

no, the bolt-down holes are separate. I think now it may be a place to put a metal vise to secure long pieces. It's the JET 17MF model, sorry don't have a pic.

This machined flat with the 2 slots are for fixturing of items too tall to be used with the drill press table. On a floor model, you may use it maybe once or twice, but on bench models, you can use it much more often. I often use my cross slide vice on it on my 12" bench mode.

Yes, I already had bought a big metalworking vise, which I'll mount down there for extra stability (don't want to lag it into the concrete). Going to put the whole thing on a Delta mobile base.
