Here are some semi-recent intarsia projects of mine. I havn't found any decent(Read:reasonably priced.) sources for small pieces of some different hardwoods, so these are stained.

I actually finished most of them over a month ago, but haven't posted them.

I'll put the links up so they don't bog the board down. The last one isn't intarsia, it's a mini version of a yard art project that I sell around here from time to time.

I may start looking around for other places, maybe even eBay, that have hardwood scraps for me to use for some pieces. Might have a little trouble finding the dark green and blue for the ND things though.:)

A disclaimer: I'm not what you would call a ND fan, but I live next to South Bend, and anything ND tends to be a pretty popular item.;)

Great work, David!

As to hardwood supply, you are correct that buying exotics in small quantities from retailers can be very expensive. Perhaps you can put the Internet community to work through cooperative buying and hooking up with folks who have resaw and drum sanding capabilty. You might also find sources via a local artisans' guild or similar organization. "Gang up" on the problem! Your needs are also be complimentary to turners, scrollers and box makers, so don't limit yourself to intarsa enthusiasts.

One suggestion is to buy the mix hardwoodboxes from Woodcraft. I waited till they went on 25 % off and got a few. One was great, full of red heart, wenge, yellow heart and a peice of cherry, oak and walnut. Another was mainly lace wood, but had a peice of 2X4X4 pc of cocobolo and 2X 4X6 pc of bass wood. They run about $20, they might provide you with a start to a intarsia wood library.

I have used mine to make a few boxes and the wenge was used as an screwhole plugs on a indoor bench.

Also keep an eye on the Memphis Hardwood site. Usually 2 or 3 times a year they run a short cutoff box of mainly domestic woods. It was a good buy.

Thanks, guys. I've had some of the same thoughts you've mentioned regarding hardwood scraps, and I've seen the Woodcraft boxes as well.

I'll get something figured out.
