Model Railroad Storage Chest

I'm looking to make a mobile storage chest with drawers for my model railroad rolling stock (my other hobby problem :)) and need a source of where I can by thin foam in sheets. I've googled with no result and I don't want to use the old fashioned sued-tex flocking because it's not soft enough.

Any suggestions or sources? Here's a pic of what the foam I'm looking for.

You might try an upholstery supply place or maybe some type of foam insulation might do the job

Haven't ever seen that in a store. Would Michael's, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby or one of those have a type of foam you could use?

This looks like "high density" foam used in cases for cameras, instrument, guns and similar.

This (http://www.kristofoam.com/) is one supplier I found via Google, but I don't have experience dealing with them.

Companies like Zero-Haliburton (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/www.zerohalliburton.com) and Pelican (http://www.pelican.com) use it in their cases, and they also sell replacement foam in various sizes.

For cutting it you can use a hot wire (best), an electric knife (not bad) or an Olfa-type razor knife. Cooling it (not frozen solid) will make it stiffer and easier to lay out and cut.

Not all foam is the same . . . I learned the hard way with a knife collection . . .

Get something that is rated for cameras . . .

Some foams will cause damage to metal or painted surfaces when they start breaking down. All foam breaks down over time and generates chemicals/fumes.

You just need to make sure you get one that does not cause damage in the process . . .
