Here is a pair of Chests of Drawers that were made for a local client. They are comstructed entirely of Poplar and are 61" tall, by 22" wide, by 20 " deep. No golden rectanle here. The carcasses are all built with traditional dust frames dadoes into the carcasses. The drawers are all Handcut dovetails. Even plowed all the groves with a plow plane in the bottom of the drawers. The finish. It's not Paint!!! This was the real pain. the poplar was dyed with two coats of black aneline dye (to avoid any white marks left if they chip.) then they were brushed with 2 coats of black dyed laquer. Then they were brushed with 2 coats of clear laquer. Finally the top and drawer fronts received a final sprayed coat of laquer. They were rubbed to a satin finish and the whole thing received a generous coat of wax. The goal was to be able to see the grain through the color. It worked, but I spent about 23+ hours finishing. There is a secret compartment ( I received permission from them to post pics of it on my web site). Basically you remove the bottom drawer and remove the false dust skirt (via two small wooded handles). Then the flocked drawer pulls out from the back on the bottom of the dust skirt. The drawer is dyed black so as not to draw attention from the outside, and rides on a pair of hanging wooden rails. The shot of me is just eye candy:D. Thanks for looking and all criticism is welcome.

Those look great!!! The finish is excellent - (better be after 23 hours, huh:p )

I like the deep drawers - those will hold a lot. Spacing is perfect, what else can I say:

Very, very nice.............

That's a lot of time for a finish Steve, I certainly hope the client was appropriately charged for that complex a finishing job. On the other hand, a friend told me once that about a third of the total time on a job should be spent on the finish. After all, it's what shows the most in the end result. Great job !!

i only allocated about 10 hours for finishing, but it was worth it. They turned out nice. I really don't mind eating a little here or there if the end result is good. Besides, It's not like I do this to get rich. Thanks for the kind words.
