First, I am new to the creek. This is by far the best WW forum going. I have been monitoring it for a few weeks. Thanks for letting me in!

I have a Jet 13" moulder/planer combo machine. I realize that this is not a production moulder but I am planning to make all of the trim for my new house. I have not been able to find a "stock" set of knives that match the casing I would like to use. Do any of you have custom knives made? If so, where do you get them and how much should they cost. I have been quoted anywere from $175 to $360 (for a 3.5" moulding.)

Thanks for your help!

I use Ballew Tool and Saw in Springfield, MO. Nice people to deal with.
Those cutters should not run over $150.00 I would not think.
1-800-288-7483. Ask for Jack or Fred.
You will have to send them a wood sample or a faxed drawing.
Fax # 1-417-865-3797
Tell Jack that Steve Clardy recommended them. And if He doesn't take care of you I'll choke him next time I see him. Lol:eek:

I buy from the guy at WDR-sales. Its a small shop that offers three cutterheads{matching}. At aprice I havent seen beat @ 35$ a profile inch. The last time I dealt with him was for a 5 3/4" crown profile that was custom and needed to have a recess for Dentil moulding. We emailed profiles back and forth till it was perfect. Great service, great price, frankly one of thew best vendors I've dealt with. Hes in KC and usually overnights my stuff

It would help if we knew what part of the world you were from... BUT, that's what UPS is for, huh?!!

MVP Sharpeners in Houston (well, actually Cypress, Tx - just NW of Houston) custom grinds knives. If you have a CAD package, you can email them the profile. If you want more info on them, let me know.

Welcome to the Creek!

I am in Fort Wayne Indiana. Yes, please give me any additional info. How much should I expect to pay?

They can be reached @ 281-373-0646. The owner is Austin Williams. Tell him I told him to give you a good introductory first-time-customer price. (I sold him a shaper today - I've known him for years). I haven't ground any, so I don't have a clue as to pricing. Have Austin tell you why you should do business with him!!

Jeremy,

I got some molding blades for my 18" WoodMaster from them some time ago for $25/inch. In that case, I only needed 2 blades. There are other profiles that need 3 blades which adds to the cost.

I'm looking at buying some more and am going to look into the vendors mentioned above. Woodshop News ads list the following:

- Schmidt, 1-201-391-5300 (technical assistance), www.cggschmidt.com (http://www.cggschmidt.com/)
- Freeborn, 1-800-228-8151, www.wmooreprofiles.com (http://www.wmooreprofiles.com/)

- Conn. Saw & Tool, 1-800-404-1220, www.ctsaw.com (http://www.ctsaw.com/)

- The Cayce Co, 1-410-771-0215, www.cayceco.com (http://www.cayceco.com/), $25./in
