I am not sure of the correct terminology and thus have had no results from my searches.
I have read about a pickup that is placed in the headstock and a white paint dot is put on the pulley.
This pickup counts the white dot as it passes and translates this into a digital readout of RPM.
Has anybody done this or can somebody help with the correct terms to help with my search.

Phil - suggest doing a Google for Digital Tachometer or Digital Counter. Best of luck with it!

Phil, They are called a tachometer just like on a car. They read the revolutions of the spindle and show you on a digital readout. Here are some links to some:

Just what I was looking for, now I know what to search on.
Frank, your suggestion was useful. Could do with one of those instead of my old Starret mechanical revcounter.
