I called Grizzly and they dont have a Powermatic "20 208 Byrd Head. The 209 is something like $800 at griz. When I go to Byrd Tool the 208 is $1195! $400 more than the newer model.

Anyone here no other places that have better prices on these types of heads ? Am I missing something, is there another spiral cutterhead thats just as good or near as good?

Thanks, still 1195.

I was debating whether it was a better deal to get a new 20" griz with spiral for 2400 and sell the PM.
I paid 1k for PM new with spiral its 3500. So I'd have about 2500 into the PM after tax an install. So its same cost basically but I get a newer planer. On the other hand I have a PM thats basically a tank I belive compared to the griz.

This is an old joke but, "When I'm out of them, they're $595"

Sorry, couldn't help it.

I am pretty sure Sunhill also sells a Byrd import version. No idea if the quality is the same as one straight from Byrd.

Yes Brad they do. Its $1055. I tried to find reviews. It came up with a link here. Two people spoke up and said they have them an liked them. It was alos said they had HSS with disposable knives and the Carbide which you could turn. It doesnt say this on there site so they might have went to all carbide. The SMC post was from 2006.

Keep your eye on Holbren. I got mine when they had a 25% off sale.

I got my Byrd head for my jointer from Sunhill. It was dropped shipped directly from Byrd to me. I think the inserts that come stock are HSS. Doesn't seem to be any need for carbide, but I guess you could swap all the cutters out.

Craig, PM sent.

That was a one time deal on some generic heads.

I had a similar conversation yesteday with a customer about why the 13" Jet planer/molder was $995 and the 15" generic planer is $795. After all, 2" should cost more right? Well, like you found out on the 20", it's about volume. They make so many more of the 15" and 20" generic heads that they can afford to sell them for less.
