This is made from stringy burl, Maple and Turquoise. It's about 7 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall and 1/8th inch thick. The finish is friction polish. The piece of wood had to dry for over a year before I could use it. I think it was worth the wait. As always, comments are welcome.

Wow Bill! Beautiful bowl! Love the form and the detail lines! Also love the color contrasts in this piece! Very rich looking with a southwestern touch to it! Very nice work and sure to grab everyone's attention!

Thanks Steve. The wood was so difficult to work with that I had to put tenon through it and make it part of the piece. Worked out ok afterall.

Bill the wood is stunning and using the few and simple lines to adorn the exterior let the wood be the star of the exterior show. The inset maple and turqoise in the bottom provides a beautiful surprise for the viewer! Fantastic turning Sir!

Bill,

I always look forward to viewing your work. You took on the segmented world by storm. This bowl, while not your typical segmented piece with dozens of pieces and an intricate pattern, is still wonderful. I love the form and the way the three burn lines appear to "bunch" the top of the bowl together. The wood, of course, is spectacular and the turquoise inlay, maple accent, are a nice surprise. Very well done.

IIRC, about two years ago at this time, you were getting ready for your first show up in Cave Creek/Carefree. Are you still doing shows or have you needed to focus on things besides turning?

Nice work Bill!

This may be the first piece I have seen with a maple tenon done like that. The inlay is the crowning touch...

I will be there soon.

Hello,

Great wood and shape and well worked. But unlike the others, I don't like the maple + turquoise inset at all. For me it's too big in relation to the rest of the bowl and the colours don't go with the colour of the burl very well. The turquoise alone might not too bad if the center was burl again. It is indeed a surprise for the viewer, but for me it's rather a bad one.

Could you elaborate on the necessity of the through tenon? I guess I don't understand.

Beautiful wood.

Thanks,

Toney

Bill, Turning burl is as much a treasure hunt as it is a artists working! What is revealed is truly a treasure! You did a great job on the style and the turquoise is very nice!

Great job,

Jeff

I'm with Horst on this one. Nice bowl form and finish - like the turquoise, but the maple seems to be too much contrast and makes me think of a repair - rather than a highlite.
That's just me though ;)

The 3 rings really set it off. Very nice. j

The reason the tenon had to come through the bowl is because the wood was so brittle. When I tried to glue it just to the bottom it would break off. When I tried to chuck it with a mortise, it blew the sides out. |It was either that or firewood.:D LOML loves it and that's what matters.:D
