Friend had a tree cut down. The top was dead and rotten, the bottom was dying but still might make for good turning, didn't look rotten but we'll see. Any idea what it is?

Alex, To me the bark looks like black or pin oak ( type of red oak) if you take a close up of the end I can tell better. But like William said could be a maple.

Do you think those are good enough pictures to tell from what it is ????
Good sharp and well lighted pictures might enable us to tell, not a blurry one like you put up.

i dont think it is maple after seeing the bark, maple is kinda smoother(a little bit) and the ridges are a little longger and more connected
