I tell you it is so hard to find decent wood at the local HD and Blowes. Is it to much to ask to have kiln dried 4x4's. I know I should just get the rough stuff and mill it myself but that takes money so for now I have depend on this stuff. If anyone is around the Lynchburg VA area and have a supplier or a source please please let me know. Thanks for listening to my rant.

I've about decided that if a straight piece of lumber crosses the dock at my local Borg, someone gets fired. Almost all my wood purchases is from a locally owned and operated lumber yard that is closer, usually has better prices, and is much more pleasant to deal with. The only purchases I now make at either color Borg are things B&B Lumber don't carry or can't special order and that I need yesterday.

I'm not from around your area and can't advise you on any specific local sources but do encourage you to keep looking for a local lumber yard that you can develop a rapport with and darken not the doors of the Borgs unless you really, really have to.

So find the sawmill that cuts the wood for all those sour mash whiskey barrels. Believe it or not there are actually people in the sawmill business that take pride in their product. It has taken me a while but I have found two sawmills that have kiln dried hardwood at a fair price. Search them out and do business with them.:)They care.:)

They carry a large selection of domestic hardwoods and are very friendly. Whlile I have several dealers in the Tidewater area I use for small quantities, if I need any quantity at all I make the trip out there. Even with the cost of gas I come out ahead, not to mention better quality. the "no agrivation" factor alone is worth it.

They also have specials on shorts, usually 4' or so, at very good prices. And they will let you pick through the stacks all day long.

Joe,

I use Larry Cagle (Lynchburg Hardwoods). He will do small quantities and will even s4s if you need that. You can reach him at 434-239-1344.

For sheet goods I go to Wurth Wood Group in Roanoke. They also have a good selection of hardwoods and hardware. I forget what the number is, but for a minimum they will deliver free.
