I just mounted one of my Christmas presents. I know...I violated the rule that it is supposed to be mounted above the table. I figure that I can calibrate it where it is though.

Dave,
Nice install, probably the best looking installation. I've seen of one of those. You have given me good ideas on installing mine. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Russ

I was "flying by the seat of my pants" on that one. I probably should have cleaned up the background for the "photo op" LOL

Very nice, Dave. I was going to eventually look for a digital scale for my 453z as well. Seems to be the ticket for repeatability.

I'm guessing that bracket is something you came up with?

Thanks for sharing the idea.

There seems to be a lot of people having their Wixey going out of calibration. Most of those have it on the TS fence. Any problems with yours Dave?

Yeah...I wanted the readout to be mounted flush to the side of the switch arm. The readout has to be mounted low enough that the scale doesn't run into the bottom of switch when the bed is fully raised. I bought some aluminum angle and flat pieces at Lowes and designed the bracket by first clamping it to the pocket on the bed of the planer. The aluminum cuts easily on the bandsaw if you feed it slowly . I bent it in a vise to be parallel to the switch arm. I then attached the flat piece that the scale is mounted to, making sure that it stayed parallel to the switch arm. Then I mounted the readout flush to the switch arm. Then I mounted the scale to the bracket...voila!

I recently had one on my PM66 tablesaw and had no problems at all. I changed to a Sawstop and must take the time to remount it. I just have to find the time. Wixey makes a Great product and has excellent service. IMHO.

Since I just mounted it last night, I don't have a lot of experience on the planer gauge yet.

Nice job Dave, your planner has 8" throat opening, but the Wixey only has 6" of travel. Do you have a way of disconnecting it when you open the planner beyond 6"? Or did Wixey supply a longer scale. I've been asking for them to do an 8" scale for over a year now

That is one drawback to the Wixey. I will have to loosen the one screw that attaches the readout to the switch arm if I go below 6 inches. I have a collar around one of the posts under the bed of the planer so I can't go below 6" without pulling it off.

Barry...How about an 8 or 12 inch scale?

Dave,

Nice install!

I found that it takes some ingenuity and creativeness to "adapt" these to a larger planer but when done right they work quite well.

I mounted one on my 15 inch Jet planer.
