I need two things. Sources please. I need sandpaper (automotive grade) for chisel sharpening. (Or maybe I should just get one of those powered sharpeners). 600, 1200, 1500, 3000, 6000, 8000 grit. For use on granite stone with veritas jig. I know I could go to a local paint shop, but I never seem to have the time.

Also, would like to find large format sandpaper (24"x24" or so), 60 & 80 grit (wood working).

Thanks,

Mike

McFeelys sells rolls of what they call sandsharp paper, they just go to 1200 grit, does have an adrasive back. I use it for my sharpening and it works very well.

I use McFeely's too. For 2000 grit I go to the local auto parts store which sells some autobody supplies. It's pretty expensive at the store. I have mixed feelings about the need for the 2000 grit though.

Online Industrial Supply (www.onlineindustrialsupply.com (http://www.onlineindustrialsupply.com)) has silicon carbide sheets to 3000G in 9x11 50 packs for $16.

I just placed my first order with them and had it shipped. It was shipped quickly and arrived the next (via ground service). The same day I received and read all the order confirmation emails. Probably due to the fact that they were only 3 hours away in the first place  and I could driven there and picked the stuff up; but I didn't notice where they were located before I ordered. The most important part is that the order was shipped promptly and correct.

Items 25025 and 25033 - have adhesive backing meant for their plate glass system. Any heavy plate glass or perfectly flat hard surface will work. I sometimes use this stuff if I have messed up a chisel:o and then once I have the nick out, I resort to my 1200, 4000, and 8000 waterstones. In addition, I have bought very fine automotive sandpaper from my local True Value Hardware Store.

I just go to the auto parts store and buy packs of different grades there. I spray on some 3M 77 adhesive and go to town.

Mike, I just got a granite plate and Mk.II for christmas and bought an assorted pack of wet/dry silicon carbide (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93106) (200/500/1000/12000) from harbor freight. Unforunately my to do list is so long I won't be able to check it out for awhile, please let us know what you go with and how results turn out.

+ 1

It's easy and not expensive. The chain auto parts stores near me don't have much, but the place near me that caters to the guys who paint flames on their hoods has plenty.

Lee Valley sells sheets down to .5 micron which is something like 9000 grit.

+1 for this supplier. Great prices and good paper. For $100, you can have a several year supply of scary sharp paper. I started at 150 and went to 2000. Works great. Doubled up on the 220 as I use it for most finishing work.

Got a granite tile from HD, and some paper from a local auto parts store. Worked great!

Mike (but I am going to check out that several year supply of paper place J Keeton)
