Hi everybody,
I have a jacobs chuck with a #1 morse taper that I have used on my old lathe for the past 10 years. Well I recently upgraded to a new Jet 1014VS and it has a #2 taper. I know I could get an adapter, but I was wondering if I could just get a new morse taper assembly? I don't need the chuck itself, just the piece that screws into it. I know I have seen these before - possibly with buffing wheels, but I can't find it now. I have checked PSI & Craft Supplies' websites and catalogs and came up with nothing. It also doesn't help that I don't know exactly what to call this.

Does anyone know were I can get another with the correct taper, or at the very least what to call it, so that I can google it?

Thanks.

Brian

Brian,

What you could use is called a "morse taper sleeve", #2 in the outside with a #1 on the inside. Enco or J & L Industrial, I know have these. I just looked in the newest catalog from Enco and there they are. WWGrainger might be another place. Happy turning end enjoy your toy.

Not sure what your threads and size of post is but here may be one. As you add adaptors you also have the possibility of more error.

I did the same thing, used a broken cordless drill chuck for my lathe, just bought a $7.00 taper adapter. You'll need to know the thread size and pitch of the chuck. I bought mine from Amazon.com, search for "morse taper chuck adapter."

What you are showing in front of the chuck is called a work arbor. Craftsman sells them on the Sears website. Sears #00929850000, $11.99.

You might be surprised what they carry for woodturning.

Brian - I agree with Dave and would recommend a taper adapter.

That was my thought too.

Thanks guys for the replies. I took a look at what you posted and used those to do a few google searches. I came up with a threaded morse taper adapter on ebay, and the guy selling it is only 20 minutes from me. He includes shipping in his price, so I emailed him to ask what he'd want if I came and picked it up. I always like buying from someone local if the price isn't too different from others on the internet, so I'll just have to wait and see. If I don't get anywhere with him, I'll try one of the links posted. It seems like all of those would work since my chuck has a 1/4"-20 thread.

Thanks again :)

Brian, also search online under "2 morse taper arbor" and you can find a variety. You should be able to find the arbor with your needed thread for cheap, but the shipping will of course raise the cost. But less than $20 delilevered if you can't get what you need elsewhere.

Another edit here; your picture looks like 1/2", not 1/4". A 1/2"-20 arbor can be found on Amazon for $6

Here's a Jacobs chuck that is almost free ($7). I've had it for a while and it's just fine.

Thanks guys. I was going to shell out the cash for a Drill chuck with MT#2. After reading this I realize I can use one my existing retired drill chucks with the arbor.

I forgot all about HF, Roger. There is one right around the corner from my house. I'll have to go over there and check them out. They may have the adapter even cheaper.

Yes, I am such a cheapskate :D

Brian,
The HF drill chuck I bought was actually pretty good...it was better (ran more true and had larger jaw opening) than the $50 one my buddy bought.
