Has anyone ever used their outboard on a lathe as a buffer? I was digging through posts and haven't seen that yet. I did read that the wheel should turn CCW. That further makes me think that it will work. I was thinking of putting a drill chuck on the outboard side of my 46-450 (that now has a VFD) and using it as a buffing station. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious- standing by for guidance.

Dan,

I use a Breal buffing system on my lathe.....inboard.

I had a 3-on-1 Beal system that I used on my Jet Mini. When I upgraded to the PM3520B, I bought the single shaft with #2 MT and now use each buffing wheel solo as it gives me more area to work.

I do the same as Ken says and for the same reasons only I use the bowl buffs.

Dan - I use the individual wheels and the Bealle system. I move the headstock down to the end of the lathe so I have a lot of working room. Using it outboard should work just fine as long as you don't have to worry about something coming loose due to direction of rotation.

Is this the one?

I really like my Don Pencil system, the long spindle adapter is so useful to get you away from your headstock. With the goblet buff taper adapter, I can use any standard taper buff I want as well.
The only thing I'd worry about using a drill chuck would be it coming loose in the taper, and my drill chuck doesn't have threads for a draw bar.

Edit: Dan, that's the Don Pencil adapter, and would work great outboard as long as you can reverse the rotation of your lathe. Length you need probably depends on what you buff and your lathe's design.

Dan - if you get the buffing system, it comes with a threaded aluminum mounting hub that allows for quick change of the buffing wheels. You can purchase a MT mandrel (fits on the mounting hub) to allow everything to operate on the lathe.
