A friend is making a custom tool handle for another friend, and the design calls for a Japanese character to be engraved on the shaft or ferrule part of the handle. It'll probably be ~1"-1.5" in diameter and ~18" in length, out of an exotic hardwood (species not determined yet). We're turning the handle on a lathe, so it'd probably be best to do the work on the finished handle I think, though making reference surfaces and only finishing the engraved area is possible if the work-holding method requires it. I assume it'd take some sort of 4th axis/rotary attachment, and a laser is probably the right tool?
How should I go about finding someone that can do this? I'm in Los Angeles, and I bet there's someone around here that can do it, but I'm not sure how to find them. Suggestions?
