Sandy and I had a chance to visit Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, KY. Although the visit was brief, I took several photos to share - here are some of them.

Worn out paint on railing, main hallway in first floor:

Stairway to top level in the Centre Family Dwelling:

This is what greeted me at the top of the stairs - look carefully at the drawer on the right-hand side:

Drawer details - don't touch:

Every nook and cranny had a surprise, just waiting for me to discover it.

Wonderful. Thanks for sharing! My wife and I are considering a trip down there soon. Perhaps for our anniversary. Furniture for me to study and plenty of photography for her.

Al and Richard,

If you have the opportunity, you should plan to stay at Pleasant Hill overnight. It's a wonderfuel experience. You have lots of time to wander about, look at the buildings and and soak the place up. It's well off the road and waking up there in the morning is like waking up on a farm in the horse and buggy days - no sounds but the farm animals. The food at the Inn is terriffic and there's that wonderful double unsupported circular stairway there that makes your jaw drop. My whole family, me my wife and my kid, went to college in Danville, nearby, and we always make it a point to stay at Pleasant Hill when we go back. It's really a nice experience, especially for woodworkers.

really nice place, like you said a surprise at every turn, I especially like shaker furniture it has simple clean lines that goes with any decor.there are several very good books on shaker furniture just filled with pictures and info, most of them are in color.
Wife and I spent our honeymoon there in 2005.

Hank,

We will stay there next time, for sure! I envy anyone who spent any time in the area, as it is gorgeous! The following photo is from my blog, an entry of a few weeks ago (larger photos available at the blog, too):

Thanks, Ken. I have started doing this more often, as it suits the subject matter .

Junior,

The renovation work at Shaker Village is one of the most impressive things I have seen anywhere. I love it!

My wife and I spent a few days at Pleasant Hill about 6 years ago. We were in the designing stage of building our house at the time and believe me we were very influenced by the architecture at Pleasant Hill. We would sit out side in the evenings on the many benches scattered here and there and just look at the place till the sun went down. There is just something about dusk at Pleasant Hill. You can almost hear the clip clop of the horse's hooves and the voices from the 1800s if you listen closely as the sun sets.

When you walk in my house you will see the influence of this place on my dwelling. Julie and I have visited several restored Shaker settlements and the only one that rivals Pleasant Hill is The Hancock Shaker Village in Mass. However Pleasant Hill is the largest and probably the best restoration of all the Shaker settlements.

Thanks for the pics Al, and I too think the black and white photos represent this atmosphere of the place quite appropriately.
