I want to make a coffee table and a couple end tables out of this beautiful old growth black walnut I found. i have been to two libraries, a woodworking store, and surfed the web, but I cannot find a good set plan!! Does anyone have any reccomendations? It cant have any turnings because I dont have one of those spinning thingies.

You might want to check out Norm Abrams sight.

How about going around to furniture stores until you see a style you like, take a couple rough measurements and make up your own plan.If you have the height, depth and width you can fill in all the others by doing some sketches. And it's good practice too. Steve

I made a coffee table and end table set from woodsmith plans they were tables that had a kindof mission style to them but I left out the many slats on the sides and ends of the tables respectively. I thought they turned out very well.

There are a number of sites with links to free plans. Here are a couple of them.

if those don't have what you are looking for let me know and I will post some of the other links I have.

Someone mentioned the New Yankee Workshop. A few years ago, I built the library/sofa table Norm built many moons ago (it's in one of his books). When LOML wanted a coffee table, I modified the plan a bit (shorter, deeper) to make it look like it belonged with the sofa table. Worked out pretty well. DB

Steve, nice idea, but I am still an amateur hack and I dont have the skills yet to draw up my own plans.
David and Dan, I checked out Norms work, he has some nice stuff, but he does not have any matching sets.
Christopher. That does look nice, but I will probably go with a solid top to show off the old growth black walnut.

Yes that option is also very nice.. they have a solid top option for that table... I did not use the tapered edge glass either too much $$$ I used plain edged glass and it looked fine. Honestly I liked the end tables more than I liked the coffee table. It has a very neat drawer idea.. hidden compartment etc.. be sure to post some pictures when you get it done.

Here (http://www.rockler.com/findit.cfm?page=521) is a set of plans from Rockler that I think are very attractive, and not too hard to build. It will take motise & tenon joinery to do these, but if you can get through that, you'll have some really nice pieces. These are Arts & Crafts pieces, and would traditionally be done in quartersawn white oak, but I think they'd look great in walnut.

Cheers,
Tom
