A friend showed me where to find a few cherry burls yesterday. They were everywhere. The catch is that we couldn't cut anything standing. So this is what we found dead and down. I've turned a couple already and it is pretty. The small bowl was solid and the larger bowl was less than solid. I will post a picture of the first bowls out of these burls soon. I wish that I could have got one or two of the green burls.

amazing! the burls appear to grow around a limb? i thought most burls grow on the side of the trunk??? were these manmade burls started by some process or were they grown by mother nature??????

amazing!

Jack, Some times the dead ones have bugs and stuff in them like ants! Up here in WI they like the sweet sap and bore into the burls to live! The onew you have are nice, I have a few to get harvested but to busy!

Show us some of the finished products!

Jeff

Burls eventually grow around the tree and choke the tree.

Sometimes it's considered environmentally friendly to cut them off the sides off live trees so they don't grow all the way around and kill the tree.

Thanks everyone, it was a nice load of wood. I've turned 3 HF's from the pile and it is some nice looking wood. I will post some pic's of them soon. I turned one out of a burl that the limb had rotted out all the way thru the burl. I had to turn it side grain to mount it in my chuck. It looks like a ball of swiss cheese but it stayed together and is fairly pretty IMHO.

P.S. Ted, I will see you at the meeting.

Jack,

WOW !!! a wonderful find, If you find to much to haul I'll be happy to bring my truck from Asheville (about 50 miles). I also want to mention to you and Ted, in Cashiers, about the CarolinaMountainWoodTurners.org (member of AAW) meeting the 3rd. Sat. of every month at the Folk Art Center in Asheville from 10 AM to 4 PM. Good luck with those Cherry Burls I would love to see them when they are finished.
