View Full Version : Help Me Buy Some Router Bits...

In the next year (or two) I plan to build kitchen cabinets for our house. I already have a big stash of European steamed beech. My wife wants a country look. I already have an ogee R/S and raised panel set but she doesn't like the profile for this project. I noticed many doors are now being made with flat panels with moulding accents - no need for a cabinet set of bits. Also, I see Peachtree has a decent sale on Freud 3-pc cabinetmaker sets. They have a cove (97-108), tapered (97-106), and ogee (I already own) panel options.

Here's where I need the help - my wife can not visualize the cove or tapered profiles from the profile cross sections. Can someone post a nice pic of these profiles on a finished door if possible? Plus any opinions on what door style is more countryish would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Sure, glad to help you spend your money. :D
I like Whiteside router bits (http://www.routerbits.com/cgi-routerbits/loadpage.cgi?1230701233_15293+router.htm). I've tried others and found them to be :p. Especially one who is out of business, good ridance!
Just run your curser over some of the listed bits and click on the ones you like. They open with the bits and the profile you will get from them.
Like these medium raised panel bits and profiles, fer eggzample. (http://www.routerbits.com/cgi-routerbits/sr.cgi?1230701233_15293+79)

My favorite profiles are a round-over, a cove and a chamfer. When I built cabinets in my shop, I used all 3 on different cabinets so people could see the different profiles.
If your wife is wanting a "Country" look, you will probably be looking for something like a simple round-over. Nothing fancy. :)

my customers have most often chosen flat panel or beadboard doors. A more classic look is with either a straight RP or a cove RP. Have you chosen a finish? Anything with a glaze will need some places for the glaze to "hang up", and a flat panel won't work as well. Also, a beadboard panel will look too much like a zebra if the glazing is too heavy.
IMNSHO, a reverse cove flat panel is MUCH MORE elegant than a 1/4" ply panel. I will add some heft to the door, and not have a tendancy to rattle.

Try the Shaker bit sets from either Marc Sommerfeld @ Sommerfeldtools.com or Infinity tools. They look pretty countryish. I bought the Sommerfeld rail&stile set.

15 degree shaker set with center stile. Very county looking if done is something besides the maple I did.

I have a pic half way down in this thread....

It shows the panel drawer front I did with a plywood panel. The doors have a shallow cove and are flipped "backward".
