I know I haven't been around much but I got a little turning in recently. I made a few ashtrays for some friends. the first is made from Walnut, Wenge, Birdseye Maple, Bubinga and Morado. Your opinions are welcome.:D

Way to pretty to be used. Awesome work. Wonder if there is a shallow glass plate that will fit inside to protect the beautiful work.

Beautiful Bill,
I can't imagine letting a cigar drop ashes into these

Bill those are beautiful - I would hate to see them used as an ash tray - better as a nut bowl!

Bill,
Good to see you posting here again. Don't be a stranger and keep those beautiful "seggy's" coming. Great work as always.

i like the craftmanship and finish of the pieces. i started counting pieces but lost count...

here's the question, should a chunk turner have an opinion of a segmented turners turning?

many differences, green vs dry wood, crotch pieces vs straight grain ... (not so sure on that one), scared of power saws vs acomplished woodworker (even though use flat work to make round), planning vs mother natures gift

i hope all opinions are consider just that, opinions

Bill - good to see you posting again! Beautiful ashtrays! Love the wood combinations and your designs! Have you thought of finding glass inserts so these could be used with out damaging the wood?

Nope. Nice job on that turning, Bill, but like the rest I'm gonna have to say that I wouldn't tap ashes into it. Try making something ugly, and we'll see.

Thank you all so very much. Good to be back. I have some orders for these ashtrays and maby even some humidors. Business has been rough so I'm doing anything that pays at this point. Thanks for the glass dish idea. I'll have to see what I can find. I just finished another one tonight. I'll post pics tomorrow. Thanks again everyone. :)

Beautiful work, as always.
My technical suggestion: incorporate a metal disk in the tray's bottom, atleast an inch in diameter, for putting out cigarettes. Remember, ash trays are not only for collecting ash. As to setting a cigar on the side and forgetting it, you will have a scorched ring. Maybe find some way to include a non-organic rest somehow.
Take care,
Norm

Bill, As already said, they are way to nice to put a cigar out in! They would make great change holders for the dresser or key holders in the entrance way!

Again beautiful!

Have a safe and Happy New Year!

What I would really do with those ashtrays, is hang them on the wall and darn anyone to touch them!! The more I look at them the prettier they become!

Thanks again my friends. I'm going to try to find a smooth glass ashtray I could put inside. That way you could still see the patterns and not do any damage. I will say though my first ashtray was a piece if Redgum, I really packed it with cigar ashes. When I re-turned it, it became my best NE turinig to date.:D Of course now my LOML won't let me touch it. Here's the link

Wow, these would make a great gift for a non-smoker. How about sending one my way:D
Truly, really beautiful work.
Makes me realize that I need more time in the shop...
