I'm really considering making a move on a couple of tools I have been wanting for a long time before the Grizzly Christmas sale ends. The Grizzly 12" Jointer G0609 and the Grizzly 20" Planer G0454Z. The 2009 price increase of these two machines combined will be $700, so now seems like the right time.

I called Grizzly this morning to see if they had a mobile base for the jointer due to the fact that it is nearly 1000 lbs. Unfortunately they don't. Does anyone know where I can find a mobile base large enough for this machine? Grizzly lists the footprint size as 44 1/4 x 18. I wont be moving it around much but would like to have the option to if necessary.

Paul,

I have one of these under my jointer, it works great. Just cut a piece of 3/4" plywood as directed. Take about 30 minute to get your jointer rolling.

Hope this helps.

HI Paul,
Congrats on your choices. I have the 609X and made a base for it. I posted pics here several months ago showing the final product. Maybe a search will bring them up.I just got the G1033XE 20" planer off of CL and have built a similar base for it as well. Just waiting on the snow delays for deliveries for us in the NW. Pics of the jointer base in action:

and base sans casters for the planer

The nice thing about this style of leveling caster is the ability to spin the machine on its center--no jockeying around with fixed wheels. I rarely have to lower the feet for the jointer and we'll see how the planer does. Good choices and Good luck. John

P.S.: I reread your post and I didn't see an X after the 0609--The spiral head is worth it. JCB.

Do the specs mean that it will support 600lbs. of weight per wheel? How would you calculate the amount of weight on each of the four corners?

Hmmmmm.

Thanks

I have two of these cut-your-own-plywood bases. One for a jointer and one for a table saw. Great, very sturdy, easy to put together. Cheaper than a lot of others, too.

I am pretty sure it is a total of 600 pounds. I think most machines are designed to have the weight on each foot fairly equal.

That jointer is a beast . If you need to move it much I would be concerned about ease of moving and the stability of the corner fixtures. If not moved much this style may work OK. !

Paul, I'd give Griz tech support a call and see if they designed the base for attaching caster directly to the bottom. If so, the Great Lakes leveling casters would be perfect. I made my bases without checking so I had an important purpose to buy a MIG. JCB

John, the angle iron base looks like a good idea. What brand of casters are you using for the jointer? Yes, I will be getting the spiral head if I get the Grizzly jointer, I just didn't notice the "X" when I was making the post.
