View Full Version : Dewalt Speedloader in a DP?

Saw on Amazon that a recommended accessory for my DP is one of those quick-change bit loaders from Dewalt. I use them a lot on my hand drill, but on a DP? Is this OK to use with the hex-shank bits, or is it better to chuck regular bits directly?

OK to use? Probably won't see a bit come flying out or anything dangerous like that. On the other hand, think about runout of the bit. The quick change adapter is securely chucked in the dp but the bits have to be able to get in and out so the opening is larger than the hex shank of the bit by some amount and this will let the bit wander about leading to oversize or out of round holes. When used in a hand drill it doesn't matter because you can't hold the drill steady enough to make a difference but in a dp with runout of the chuck measured in thousandths the difference would be noticable.

That's kind of what I figured. Probably OK for general drilling where you just need a hole, but not for precision work.

Hi Russ,

For quick-change of bits on a drill press you'll want something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000DCYZ5/qid=1087626664/br=1-10/ref=br_lf_hi_10//002-2555586-7596045?v=glance&s=hi&n=552798

URL shortened to: http://snipurl.com/76x3

No runout, no slipping, no chuck-key and it only takes a couple of seconds to change bits.

Hope this helps,

I seem to remember seeing ads for a Jacobs chuck that was keyless. Are these still around and are they for DP's?

Jacobs does make chucks of this style for drill presses, but they are usually about $100 more than the ones from Grizzly:

Albrecht is another brand that has had good reviews:
