PIP - Cocobolo Jewelry Box

If ya'll want to see it, I'd love to do this project in progress... Not sure what the schedule will allow or how often I'll be updating, but I'll do my best to be down there workin' on it. Takin' pictures is half the fun.

I stared at the wood for a while longer today, after planing the boards yesterday... I was trying to figure out how I wanted the grain to run on the box...and the lid. Once that got worked out, I cut the box parts and glued it up. This is going to be a bevelled box, hopefully it'll turn out lookin' like a gem.

The bottom is bookmatched.....

I also worked on a laminated border for the lid.... I have the piece for the lid picked out, but it's just rough cut and about an inch or two longer and wider than it needs to be. But, I worked on the border. A series of strips of cocobolo and ebony. This will border the lid.

That's enough for the day..... time to relax and watch some football.
Next up - going to spline the corners with ebony and work on the lid.

Thanks for looking...

I just sit the maple outside with a sign.. Take some.. Now.. if I was rich like those folks up in Flowery Branch (home of the Falcons) and had cocobolo to work with.. it would be under lock and key and booby trapped claymores guarding the entrance...

Sarge...

Thanks to all ya'all....

Here is the "look" I'm going for..... somebody sent me this picture and I'm givin' it a shot....

I hope it turns out half as good as this.

I'm not sure about doin' this Project in Progress.... maybe it's better I wait and see if I can pull it off first...then drop a pic... Might wind up as a nice kitty litter box, or something completely not intended

I'm definitely going to take my time....

All I did last night was take the lid's laminated border out of the glue up jig.

I used a sales magazine from the junk mail pile to keep the border from sticking to the plywood jig. Plywood bottom and used some strips of plywood for the sides, also protected by magazine page...a couple strips of plywood for the C-Clamps to keep the laminates in line.

When I took them out of the jig, they were basically a cocoon. So, I trimmed them down on the table saw to the correct width of 3/4" and that cleaned 'em up. The grain side had very little glue/magazine stuff....so I didn't have to peel it off. The panel for the middle needs some attention (planed and trimmed to size) and the borders need to be mitered and glued. That was all I did last night - about 20 minutes, tops.

My turn to cook dinner tonight, so I don't know what I'll get done....probably not much. I can always clean up a little down there...

Measure twice, cut once…. And oh yeah..it took me a while to realize you had to write the first measurement down….

But, man…. I’m glad this part is done!!!

Splines....

Tonight I went down and cut up the splines.... I used the bandsaw for this. Laid them out on the ebony with a 45* device...and cut, flip flopping as you go.

I'd like to point out the shopsmith This is the machine that I inherited from my dad (while he was still living) and it is a 1953 model. He got it new... Runs like a champ and I used it to resaw a 3-1/2" piece for the bottom.... (see above).

And, I read somewhere along the line that when you glue 'em in. This is the one place that you want to slather on the glue. So, I'm tryin' it out that way. Hopefully, they'll clean up nice. Won't know until Saturday.

Thanks for looking - and I hope I'm not boring anybody....
