    Bowed Front Hanging Cabinet

Here's the most recent piece I've completed. It was built for a private show in Virginia Beach I have coming up in the middle of the month. It is a bowed front hanging cabinet. The Door, top and bottom bow out about 5/8" over the entire span from left to right. It is 13" wide, 7 1/2" deep and 24" tall. The carcass is mahogany, and the veneer is some scrap makore I had left over from when I did my tool cabinet. The bead that goes around the door is just ebonized mahogany and the pull is maple I turned and ebonized. The finish is about 5 coats of B.L.O. on the door and 2 on the carcass. All of the mahoagany was thicknessed by hand. Since I worked on it late at night, I went the quiet rout. The dovetails are all hand cut, and the surface, on both the inside and outside is planed, not sanded. I think this qualifies as a true neander prject. The door is a bent lamination over a form places in the press. Total time is 14 1/2 hours including making the form. Still need to place the catch and attach the French cleat to the back. The back panel is actually finish birch plywood. I wanted to keep it light, and I didn't have any maple on hand. Thanks for looking.

That is well done. Is the entire case from a single plank of mahogany? Looks like the top and right side are cut from a continuous plank....nice touch even though that would likely not be seen.

Is the door coopered? Did you hog out a thick solid plank? Sheetgood?

Steve nice detailing....I like the bead/edge to cover the laminations. Beautful dovetail layout....great rhythm. Is the door veneer resawn or purchased as veneer? Terrific work!

    Steve,
Wonderful work. Any chance at a closer shot of the DT's?

    Steve,

That cabinet is really very nice. It earns an "outstanding" in my book.

Nice job on the dovetails, too.

    Tim,
The case is made from a solid piece. And the front is coopered. I just called it bowed because I didn't cut staves and assemble that way.

    Mark,

The front is actually constructed of 3 sheets of Luan Plywood. It bend well in the press. Each sheet is rotated and I used Unibond 800. Juan really soaks up the adhesive so you have to use a ton.

    Alan,

I'll try to snap another shot of the DT's. Just a 2 small tails, and 1 small pin and one larfe pin pattern.

    Thanks for the kind words

Steve, that's a wonderful piece. I've been considering trying something bow-front myself...you and Mr Singer have raised the bar!

Here you go Alan. There's also a shot of the center bead on the front of the shelves. Thanks for the kind words all.
