    Stanley 358 Miter Saw

So I aquired a 358 stanley miter saw that is 99% complete. Missing three little screws that are easy to replace. It has four patent dates, original saw, and needs a good cleaning and new saw bed.

I estimate the age is early early 1900 (Dates are 04. 04. 08. and 12 for the patents). Not bad for $40!

For the bed, it is original, but needs to be replaced, what wood would you all recommend?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have a 358, though not sure what wood the base is made of - it's buried in my garage for the winter...
I'm sure someone here knows better than I!

Doesn't too much matter, as long as it's a stable wood. I had a 150 with what I think was the original wood, and it was some anonymous white wood. Birch, beech, even pine should do fine, I would think.

I used poplar on mine (a 2358). Not sure what the original wood was, but just about anything would work. Cheap and on-hand would be my criteria.
