Motor for ClearVue DC

I recently found a furniture shop that was closing and had an unused ClearVue for sale. The gentleman offered it to me for $150, including the unused motor. Unfortunately, he couldn't find the motor (he suspected one of his former employees probably snagged it). So, he agreed to sell me the cyclone, impeller and assorted parts for $100.

Now, I need to find a sutable 5HP electic motor (original 14" impellor). Money is tight, so price is a factor. Any ideas where I can find a motor for this setup ? Used is OK too.

I'd go straight to the source:

My limited understanding is that the Clearvue cyclone comes with a 5 HP motor that only runs at 2 or 3 HP.

Perhaps someone who owns one could clarify that and you wouldn't need to purchase such a large motor.

Regards, Rod.

Hello Thomas

I bought my motor from Electric Motor Warehouse. It is a Leeson and recommended by Bill Pentz for his cyclone design. No it is not cheap, but it is a top shelf motor.

Tom,

I would also highly recommend that you go right back to the source, Ed Morgano at ClearVue Cyclones and purchase the motor directly from him. You will get a new motor at a good price, with a warranty, and if you are like the rest of us who purchased and installed ClearVue Cyclones (or any other kind) you will most likely need advice and questions answered. Ed is a straight up guy who will help you even if all you do is buy the motor.

Incidentally, the ClearVue kit is already pre-cut and drilled for the 5HP Leeson motor that is standard with the ClearVue.

Or where CV buys them. Electric Motor Warehouse, I think. It is about 350.00 plus shipping IIRC. When I got my Clear Vue, Ed wasn't stocking the motors yet, and I ordered mine direct. http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/120554.htm Actually its 321. and change plus shipping. Jim.

Thom

I have a Clearvue kit with the original 5 HP motor new in box. I've replaced with a 3 phase motor and would like to sell it.

Let me know if your interested and I'll post it on the classifieds.

Ken

My cyclone is a kit-built Pentz design which should be fairly equivalent to the CV, has a 16" impeller supplied by Ed, and the Leeson 5HP motor. With my ductwork and a single gate open, a clamp-on ammeter registers around 16 to 17 amps (240v). The motor draws about 8 to 9 amp with no load and has a nameplate FLA of 20.8 amps. I don't recall the current draw with a bare cyclone body - no ductwork or filters.

Assuming a straight line curve fit from 8 amps at zero load to 20.8 amps at 5HP -(an assumption I'm not real comfortable with) - the motor is running at about 3.5 HP. But, that is very, very installation dependent, and whatever motor is used, the motor current should be verified with the cyclone installed and in operational configuration - especially if the motor's FLA is less than 20 amps.

I think the 3 hp thought came out of this being a compressor duty motor. Judging from the amp draw on the 3 hp Leeson motor on the Grizzly G0690/1 table saws, the draw is proper for a 5 hp motor. I tried to look at a 5 hp Baldor for comparison, but they didn't have the amp draw online. Jim.
