Thread: So I've got this pretty piece of wood...

So I've got this pretty piece of wood...

...and I don't know what to do with it.

I found this at my suppliers and just fell in love with it. It's a piece of 5/4 yellow birch that's about 6' long by 8 1/2" wide.

I'm thinking it's begging to be a table top of some kind.

I've got another auction coming up and I'm thinking that I could make something on the "artsy" side that could potentially get a lot of oo's and aa's (i.e. lot's of exposure with a big money crowd) and that also wouldn't take a billion hours to complete. These auction projects have to be worked into money making projects.

I guess I'm looking for some inspiration from you all. To compliment and maybe help your thought process, I've got some black walnut, qs white oak, jatoba and red oak cut offs kicking around.

    Any ideas would be welcome.

    Thanks in advance,
    -joe

Looks like a book-match waiting to happen...

It'll probably end up looking like a woman's figure if you're careful. Those curves attract a lot of attention....even when they're in a piece of furniture!

    Thanks Brad!

I'd love to book match them, but unfortunately I don't have a band saw yet (I do however have access to one).

I guess that brings me to a question. After book matching and surfacing, what's the typical yield in thickness from a 5/4 board?

yeild from a resawn and bookmatched 5/4 board

You will have to be a steady resawer to end up with anything over 1/2" in your final thickness. Thats assuming the board is very flat.
